The Aerospace, Defense and Marine (AD&M) business unit of Tyco Electronics will be establishing an Advanced Development Group and are now seeking hands-on scientists / engineers to staff this new enterprise. The lifeblood of our business – and one of our Company’s critical values – is Innovation. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with new technology and innovation to position the business unit for future success in the long-cycle business of our market segments including commercial aerospace, defense-related industries and marine (including off-shore). The Advanced Development Group will work on new product concepts by seeking to incorporate the very latest advances in materials and processes with a goal of developing products for sale in the 3 to 7 year time horizon. The industries we serve are driven by the need to reduce weight, to handle increased power and higher bandwidths, and to increase reliability. Therefore, the main responsibilities of the development engineer will be conduct experiments to produce and characterize new materials and product prototypes to meet those needs. To accomplish their work the group will interact with Corporate Research & Development, outside suppliers – especially start–ups – and with universities and other research institutes. They will also work closely with our customers’ R&D organizations. The Advanced Development group will perform the initial development work to validate their product concepts. As product concepts progress beyond prototypes, the Advanced Development group will work with the other AD&M development teams to facilitate the rapid development of qualified products. Key Responsibilities - Perform research in new, critical technology areas that offer the promise of increased reliability reduced weight and increased power. The identified areas of specialty for these positions may include:
- Signal transmission and signal integrity using non-conventional materials.
- Nanotechnology, Advanced Polymers, Chemical Sensors, and Foam Dielectrics.
- Solid State Relays, Power Controllers and Advanced Power Distribution Systems.This is a hands-on position that will provide the critical data for determining the viability of advanced material and product concepts. Rigorous data collection and analysis will be essential.
- Take direction from senior scientists/engineers in the fields as well as formulating experimental approaches and recommending equipment purchases.
- Work with internal specialists in areas such as molding, modeling, etc. to create prototypes and conduct experiments as required.
- Be responsible for the safety and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment.
- Familiarize oneself with literature research in field and with the appropriate class of materials.
- Work with internal development engineers and our manufacturing organization to transition successful technology to large-scale manufacturing and the end-user market.
About the Technology The specific areas of interest that we are looking to staff include: - The use of single and multiwall Carbon Nanotubes as substitutes for metallic conductors or as shielding materials.
- Polymeric varistors and conductors to act as overvoltage and over-current protection.
- Ferrite loaded polymers to provide filtering and EMI protection.
- High temperature solid-state switching
- Solid state chemical sensors
- We are also looking to build suitable test facilities to evaluate these materials and components.

| Responsibilities & Qualifications: |
Skills and Qualifications - We anticipate that successful candidates would have a degree demonstrating excellence in the field of material science, electrical sciences, or chemistry. Bachelors or Masters degree required.
- We expect that successful candidate would have experience in materials or product characterization, and in designing and conducting the experiments necessary to evaluate the real-world viability of technology.
- Experience in non-metallic conductors, intrinsically conductive polymers, non-metallic shielding, or overvoltage or over-current protection. Experience in designing, evaluating, or promoting products that will be used in harsh environments.
- We are looking for candidates who are keenly interested in investigating the possibilities of converting new technologies into products that that will provide our customers with solutions over the next 5 to 10 years.
