Overview:

The Aerospace, Defense and Marine (AD&M) business unit of Tyco Electronics will be establishing an Advanced Development Group and are now seeking scientists / engineers to staff this new enterprise.  The lifeblood of our business - and one of our Company's critical values - is Innovation.  The successful candidates will have the opportunity to drive new technology and innovation to position the business unit for future success in the long-cycle business of our market segments including commercial aerospace, defense-related industries and marine (including off-shore).  This is an ideal opportunity for a scientist to have a significant impact on our business through development of advanced concepts with practical product applications.

The Advanced Development Group will work on new product concepts by seeking to incorporate the very latest advances in materials and processes with a goal of developing products for sale in the 3 to 7 year time horizon.  The industries we serve are driven by the need to reduce weight, to handle increased power and higher bandwidths, and to increase reliability.  Therefore, the main responsibilities of the scientists / engineers will be to pursue new technology with the goal of creating advantages for our customers in these areas - and to differentiate our products from those of our competition.

To accomplish their work the group will interact with Corporate Research & Development, outside suppliers - especially start-ups - and with universities and other research institutes.  They will also work closely with our customers' R&D organizations.  The Advanced Development group will perform the initial development work to validate their product concepts.  As product concepts progress beyond prototypes, the Advanced Development group will work with the other AD&M development teams to facilitate the rapid development of qualified products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and experiments in new, critical technology areas that offer the promise of increased reliability reduced weight and increased power.  The identified areas of specialty for this Electrical Engineering scientist are Solid State Relays, Power Controllers and Advanced Power Distribution Systems.
  • Identify and collaborate with key universities, research institutes, and start-up operations specializing in the specific technology field.  The scientists within the Advanced Development Group will be expected to guide senior management in the investment of research dollars within their field of specialty.
  • Familiarize oneself with literature research in field and with the appropriate class of materials and then build product concepts to test.
  • Work with internal development engineers and our manufacturing organization to bring successful technology to large-scale manufacturing and the end-user market.
  • Participate in discussions with our customers' Research & Development and procurement organizations to understand customer requirements for technology applications.
  • Provide updates to senior management on the progress of the advanced research and other possible uses for the new technology.
  • Manage, with the Program Manager, the R&D budget for the specific technology area of responsibility.

About the Technology

The specific areas of interest that we are looking to staff lie in the fields of solid state switching technology and power distribution. We are interested in applying SiC devices or other innovative technology in power distribution centers for aerospace, marine, and offshore applications. The products and systems we wish to develop must operate with extremely high reliability in environments characterized by severe temperature conditions and fluctuations combined with challenging mechanical conditions. We anticipate that the integration of such devices into power distribution centers will also involve the need for high reliability software development

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

  • We anticipate that successful candidates would have an advanced degree (PhD preferred) demonstrating excellence in the field of electrical engineering, computer science, or material science.
  • Thesis or other completed and / or ongoing research work in the area of power distribution and solid state electronics in high temperature or other extreme environments.
  • We are looking for candidates who are keenly interested in investigating with our customers real-world problems that will become more acute over the next 5 to 10 years and in conceiving products that provide solutions for those problems.
  • Tyco Electronics will consider newly graduated PhD. recipients with thesis or advanced research work in a requisite field or more experienced professionals currently in the field working with and researching these areas.
